About us

For 20 years, SEI Asia has been at the forefront of research and policy engagement on sustainable development in the region. We bridge interdisciplinary research with policy solutions to address complex challenges such as air pollution, transboundary water governance, climate and disaster risks, the circular economy, and health.

Based in Bangkok, Thailand and hosted by Chulalongkorn University, SEI Asia aims to make the region more resilient, equitable, and sustainable in the face of these pressing issues.

Gender and social equity is central to our mission and has been a guiding principle from the beginning. Our intersectional approach to ensures that research and policy recommendations consider how gender, age, ethnicity, and other social dimensions influence people’s experiences. With these factors in mind, we ensure that our work addresses the diverse needs of all communities and avoids perpetuating existing inequalities.

Throughout our journey, we have built strong partnerships, strengthened institutions, and enhanced the capacity of our collaborators. As we mark two decades of impact in Asia, we reflect on our contributions and their role in advancing environmental resilience across the region. Our efforts have helped shape regional policy landscapes, and we remain committed to catalyzing positive change in the years to come.

SEI Asia’s research teams work in a number of thematic areas, in addition to driving several initiatives and programmes. This work covers climate change, disasters and development, gender, environment and development (GED), water resources management, energy futures, city health and wellbeing, capacity development for research in the Mekong Region, and regional collaboration. SEI Asia additionally provides policy support that reaches across all of our research areas.
